Business tax planning for Atlanta business owners

An Atlanta business tax plan should connect the business return, your personal position and the decisions you can still change. Before choosing a CPA or enrolled agent, ask the firm to explain which entities, payments and jurisdictions it will review, what you will receive and who will put approved decisions into effect.

Financial Sales Insider focuses on established owners with annual personal income before tax of at least $500,000, preferably $1 million or more. Company revenue, business profit and asset value are different measures. This guide helps you define the work your situation needs and assess a proposed engagement.

Start with the decision and the ownership map

Describe the problem behind your search. Perhaps profits have changed, a partner is joining, or your existing accountant prepares returns without updating your expected tax payments. A defined decision gives a prospective adviser something specific to assess.

List each operating entity, its tax treatment, its owners and the professional who prepares its return. Include your individual return and any separately owned property business. Explain which records come from the bookkeeper and which instructions go to payroll. An LLC label alone does not tell the adviser how the business is taxed.

Then ask what the first stage will deliver. A useful response identifies the information needed, the question being modeled and the assumptions that could change the answer. A menu of deductions cannot establish whether the adviser has understood your business.

Test the Georgia entity-and-owner payment plan

For an eligible partnership or S corporation, Georgia's pass-through entity election deserves a separate analysis. The Department of Revenue describes an annual election to pay income tax at entity level. It has eligibility conditions, is made through the applicable return and becomes irrevocable after the relevant due date. A single-member LLC that is not taxed as a partnership or S corporation is not eligible. [1]

Ask the adviser to compare the position with and without the election for the actual owners and tax year. The comparison should distinguish the entity's cash requirement from each owner's payments and explain what remains outside the engagement. This guide does not establish that electing will reduce your combined tax bill.

Ask for a comparison before authorizing an election

Payment history matters. Georgia requires an electing entity to make estimated payments in the same manner as a C corporation. Its FAQ says owners' estimated payments cannot be transferred to the pass-through entity. It also describes a limited penalty-computation procedure that can take certain owner payments, credits or attributes into account. That procedure is not a transfer of the money or automatic relief from penalties. [1]

Bring the entity's payment confirmations and the owners' payment records as separate sets. Ask who will reconcile them, calculate any remaining requirement and issue the instructions. If the entity and personal returns are handled by different firms, establish who coordinates their assumptions before approving a payment.

Ask which Atlanta tax boundary the work actually covers

Income-tax planning and sales-tax review answer different questions. If your business sells taxable property, an adviser needs to understand where customers take delivery, rather than relying on the office address used in a metropolitan-area listing.

Georgia's Department of Revenue says sales tax is due in most instances at the rate of the county where the customer takes delivery. If delivery is in the City of Atlanta, a city sales tax generally applies in addition to state and county taxes. The Department also says a dealer must collect at the delivery jurisdiction's rate even without a presence there. [2]

For a business delivering goods to several addresses, request a review that connects actual delivery records with the jurisdictions used in the sales system. Ask how exceptions are identified, who maintains the tax settings and who checks a change in delivery arrangements. Do not turn that general rule into a conclusion that every service or software sale is taxable.

A pure service practice may need a different assignment. Tell the firm what you actually sell and ask it to establish whether a transactional tax review belongs in scope. An irrelevant checklist is not evidence of a thorough plan.

Keep vehicle transactions in their own review

For vehicle sales that are subject to sales and use tax, the Department identifies a separate Atlanta rule: the 1% municipal option sales tax does not apply to those sales. [2] That is not a statement that every vehicle transaction falls under sales and use tax.

A dealership owner should ask the professional to establish the applicable tax regime before applying a rate or exception. Request a documented treatment for the actual transaction type. A general merchandise rate copied into the wrong vehicle transaction is not a complete review.

Put responsibility and evidence in the engagement

Ask the firm to name the person who leads the work and the specialist who handles questions outside that person's scope. For each proposed action, establish the required records, approval, implementation responsibility and follow-up check. A projection is useful only if you understand its assumptions and what happens next.

Compare credentials separately from experience. The IRS explains that CPAs, enrolled agents and attorneys have unlimited representation rights before it. [3] That does not establish experience with your industry, Georgia elections or sales systems. Ask about the actual work and team, then compare CPA and enrolled-agent scope where needed.

Use the same business summary when seeking proposals. For broader pricing questions, compare the work behind a tax-planning fee. Confirm which returns, analyses and implementation tasks the quoted fee includes.

Questions to settle before choosing a tax firm

Can personal estimated payments simply become entity payments?

No. Georgia's FAQ does not allow that transfer to an electing pass-through entity. Have the adviser reconcile the separate accounts and consider any applicable penalty-computation provision without treating it as a payment transfer. [1]

Must one firm prepare every return?

The important selection question is how the work connects. If different firms handle different returns, agree who obtains the entity information, updates the owner projection and communicates approved instructions. Get that handoff into the engagement scope.

Describe the Atlanta tax help you need

Summarize your ownership, personal pretax income range, operating entities and the decision ahead. Explain whether you need recurring planning, a specific review or a change of adviser. Availability, professional fit and engagement terms require confirmation before you appoint a firm.
