Tax preparation in Phoenix: choose the right scope

Tax preparation in Phoenix can mean help with this year's individual return, a business return, missing prior years or a tax notice. Decide which of those jobs you need before comparing prices or booking a free consultation. A service that fits a basic current return may not cover a backlog or a separate dispute.

The local examples below show how the work is described in practice. Use them to prepare a clear request and check the limits of an offer. They are source-based comparisons, not an assurance that a particular provider is accepting your case.

Identify the return and the problem separately

Start with a short description of the work, not just a request for someone to do your taxes.

What is happening What to explain before booking What the service must clarify
A current individual return Income types, states involved and whether your records are complete Whether the return fits the program or preparer's scope.
A business return The business entity, owners, accounting records and related personal return Which returns and records work are included.
One or more missing years The years involved, available documents and what has already been filed Whether prior-year preparation is offered and how missing information is handled.
A notice or tax problem The issuing agency, notice date and issue described Whether the engagement covers the notice, return preparation, representation or a referral.

Those jobs can overlap. A business owner might need a current return and a response to an older notice, but buying one service does not establish that both are covered. The useful first answer is which work someone is agreeing to do.

Compare three Phoenix service descriptions

The following pages were reviewed on 1 November 2026. Their descriptions show different service boundaries; they do not establish credentials, current appointments or the terms of a future engagement.

Local resource What its page describes The question to resolve
City of Phoenix VITA Free preparation and supported self-filing options for eligible users Can this program prepare my actual return, and which current service channel should I use?
Phoenix Tax Guy Individual and business returns, past-due returns, notices, multistate work and planning Which return years or problem work belong in my proposal, and what is separately quoted?
Singer Tax & Accounting Individual, corporate and small-business services, planning, entity work and reconciliation Does the specific service or consultation cover the question I want answered?

City of Phoenix: preparation and self-preparation are different options

The City's free-tax-preparation page describes in-person or drop-off VITA services, facilitated self-assistance and an online self-filing route. In one arrangement a volunteer prepares the return; in another you use software with support. Check which option is available for the current season and whether you can use its document and technology process. [1]

Explain any self-employment, rental income, investments, other-state information or prior-year work before booking. Ask whether the particular program can handle those items and what to bring. Do not assume that free preparation includes ongoing planning or someone responding to a later notice.

The IRS VITA/TCE guidance says available services vary by site and individual VITA sites can set their own limits. Use the City's current requirements and the official locator; a published limit for a different service or city is not a substitute. [2]

Phoenix Tax Guy: separate the current return from the backlog

Phoenix Tax Guy advertises individual and business returns, past-due tax work, help with IRS or state notices, sales/use and multistate work, and planning. It also directs readers to Certified Advisors for broader accounting, bookkeeping, payroll and financial services. Those descriptions identify possible workstreams, not a promise that every one is included in a preparation fee. [3]

If you have a missing year and a current return, list them separately. Ask which documents are needed for each, whether any information must be reconstructed and who will deal with a related notice. The page says fees depend on required forms, complexity and record condition, with business, multistate, past-due and specialty work quoted after review. Give the preparer the same complete situation that you want priced. [3]

For example, a request saying only that you need a business return leaves out an unfiled personal year or an outstanding state notice. Include those facts in the initial scope discussion. This is a way to define the work, not a conclusion about how either matter should be resolved.

Singer: read the free-consultation restriction

Singer Tax & Accounting describes individual, corporate and small-business tax services, planning and reconciliation of QuickBooks records to corporate returns. It also advertises a free 30-minute consultation about forming a new business entity or correcting an existing entity. [4]

That consultation has specific limits: the page restricts it to outside the busy January 1 to April 15 period and says it does not answer personal income-tax questions. The restriction concerns that advertised consultation. It does not mean Singer's separately described paid individual services are unavailable. [4]

A reader who wants an individual-return question answered should therefore ask about the relevant individual service, rather than assume the business-entity consultation is the right appointment. A business owner comparing the offer should explain the entity issue and confirm the current scope and timing.

Decide what happens after preparation

Before sending records, establish whether the assignment covers only the named returns or also any agreed notice response, amendment, missing-year work or planning. Ask who will contact you about missing information and how additional work will be approved.

For a notice, identify the issuing agency and the document involved. The national tax attorney versus CPA guide explains why a legal or representation issue can require a different engagement from ordinary preparation. Do not choose a role from a headline alone or assume that a firm handling tax returns has agreed to handle every dispute.

Keep credential checks separate from the service comparison. The CPA, enrolled agent and preparer guide explains the distinctions. For an Arizona CPA or firm, use the Arizona Board of Accountancy's guidance; the Board also explains out-of-state mobility and why a general business-directory listing is not a license check. [5]

For official state resources or free-help routes beyond Phoenix, use the Arizona tax-help guide. It separates state administration, volunteer help and paid professional selection.

Questions about Phoenix tax preparation

Can free Phoenix tax help prepare every type of return?

No single program should be assumed to cover every return. Explain your income and return types, other states and any missing years, then check the current site's scope. The City's preparation and supported self-filing options also involve different responsibilities and processes. [1][2]

Does a free consultation include personal tax advice?

Read the actual offer. Singer's advertised free business-entity consultation expressly excludes personal income-tax questions and has an off-season restriction. That is a limit on that consultation, not a general rule about all free consultations or the firm's paid individual services. [4]

Is a notice included when I pay for a return?

Only the actual agreement can settle that. List the notice separately, ask what work is being accepted and identify who will handle it. A provider's menu showing both preparation and tax-problem services does not establish that both are included in one fee.
