Tax help in Arizona: free filing help and official resources
Getting tax help in Arizona starts with deciding what you need: someone to prepare a return, assistance using filing software, an answer about a state account, or advice on a more complicated situation. Those needs lead to different services. A nearby office, a free-help announcement and an official tax department page are useful for different reasons.
Use the routes below to narrow the choice before arranging an appointment or sending documents. The local guides explain actual service descriptions; they do not establish that a firm or volunteer site has space for your return.

Start with the task you need completed
| Your immediate need | A useful starting route | What to establish next |
|---|---|---|
| Help preparing a basic individual return | IRS VITA/TCE information and the current site locator | Whether the site can prepare your return, its current season and appointment process. |
| Help completing your own return | A local program that explicitly offers supported self-preparation | Whether you will enter the information yourself, what support is available and which returns the software supports. |
| An Arizona individual income-tax or state-account question | Arizona Department of Revenue's official individual-tax resources | The department's current route for that particular state question. |
| Paid preparation or advice | A preparer whose experience and service fit the work | The returns, years and additional services the person agrees to handle. |
The IRS free-help page describes VITA and Tax Counseling for the Elderly, or TCE. These provide free basic preparation for qualifying taxpayers. Available services depend on the site and the volunteers' certified expertise. The IRS explains that individual VITA sites can set their own limits; one local program's income figure is not an Arizona-wide eligibility rule. [1]
Check the service as well as the free-help label
Arizona resources show why the service details matter. The City of Phoenix's free-tax-preparation page describes in-person or drop-off preparation, facilitated self-assistance and an online self-filing route. Having a volunteer prepare a return and having help while you prepare it yourself are different arrangements. [2]
The United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona's VITA page describes local return limitations and a remote process that requires document uploads and phone communication. Its published exclusions include rental-property income and certain business situations. Those are the operator's service limits, not a statement that the income is untaxable or that every Arizona volunteer site has identical rules. [3]
Before choosing a site, explain the parts of your return that may affect its scope: self-employment, rental activity, investments, another state, or a missing prior year. Ask whether the site can handle those items and which records it needs. A location's presence in a directory does not answer those questions.
Check the tax year and the current booking route
Seasonal pages can remain visible after appointments end. The Arizona volunteer Tax-Aide website contains information for different seasons and directs readers to its locations and contact routes. Its own notice says that official IRS, ADOR and AARP Foundation Tax-Aide documents take precedence. Use the official AARP Tax-Aide locator or the IRS locator to check current arrangements. [1][4]
Keep three dates separate: the tax year of the return, the date of the announcement and the season in which assistance is offered. Before travelling or uploading records, confirm the actual service date, eligibility, appointment instructions and required documents. An old event notice is not confirmation of an open appointment.
Use Arizona's department for state questions
For an Arizona individual income-tax or state-account question, start with the Arizona Department of Revenue's individual-tax information. The Arizona Ombudsman's tax-assistance FAQ also identifies DOR as the state taxpayer-assistance route. Follow the department's current website instructions for the issue rather than copying a telephone number from an old announcement. [5][6]
A question about a state return is separate from a question about a federal IRS return. Likewise, getting an explanation from a tax agency and engaging someone to advise or represent you are different steps. Describe the document, return or account involved so that you approach the appropriate service.
Do not send your Social Security number or full return in an initial general enquiry. Ask the organization how it wants confidential records delivered. The Arizona Tax-Aide contact guidance specifically asks people not to include financial information or Social Security numbers in its general contact message. [4]
Choose paid help by the work, then check the person
An office finder can help you locate a paid service. For example, H&R Block's Arizona office page links to its city and office options. That solves a location-search problem; it does not establish what a particular preparer will include in your engagement or resolve an Arizona state-account question. [7]
For paid work, identify the actual return and any separate need for planning, bookkeeping, missing-year preparation or notice response. Ask who will prepare it, what information they need and what happens if additional work is identified. The CPA, enrolled agent and preparer guide explains the national credential and engagement distinctions.
Use the Arizona Board of Accountancy's guidance to check an Arizona CPA or firm. The Board does not recommend particular practitioners, and a general business directory can include accountants who are not CPAs. It also explains that qualifying out-of-state CPAs may practice through mobility provisions, so an absent Arizona entry needs follow-up with the relevant licensing jurisdiction. No named practitioner's status is verified by this guide. [8]
Use the city guide that matches your decision
- Phoenix tax preparation: distinguish basic current-return help from missing-year, notice and separately scoped business work.
- Tucson tax preparation: compare local program limits, record requirements and remote or appointment workflows.
- Mesa tax preparation: agree who supplies the books, payroll records and other inputs needed for the return.
- Scottsdale tax preparation: clarify calculations, coordination and follow-through behind advertised planning services.
- Flagstaff tax preparation: check closed programs, moved booking routes and current service fit.
These guides address different practical choices. Use the one relevant to your work; a city name alone does not determine the right service.
Questions about Arizona tax help
Can I get free tax help in Arizona?
Free basic preparation and supported self-preparation may be available when your return fits the program's requirements. Check the current IRS or AARP locator and the site's own scope. Eligibility and supported work can differ, so do not use another city's published income limit as the answer for your site. [1][2][3]
Which questions should I take to the Arizona Department of Revenue?
Use DOR's official resources for the Arizona state-tax issue involved. If the question concerns a federal return, use the appropriate IRS route instead. A volunteer preparation appointment or paid office listing should not be assumed to provide the same service as state taxpayer assistance. [5][6]
Does an office listing mean I have found a CPA?
No. Check the individual or firm's stated credential through the appropriate official process. Arizona's Board warns that business-directory results may include accountants who are not CPAs. Then separately establish relevant experience and the work the person will provide. [8]
