Choose tax and 401(k) plan support in Strongsville
Before commissioning business tax planning or renewing support for an existing 401(k), identify the work being bought and the responsibilities the employer keeps. Strongsville service descriptions include plan administration, investment functions, employee education and tax work. The appointment needs to identify which functions your particular arrangement covers.
This discussion concerns an existing private-sector 401(k) covered by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), with employees other than the owner. Have the responsible professional confirm the plan's actual coverage and applicable duties. Owner-only arrangements, public or church plans and choosing a new plan require different analysis. [8]
Start with the function you need covered
Imagine an established owner reviewing an annual service proposal while retaining the company's tax preparer. The owner wants to know whether existing appointments cover the required work or whether a specific function remains unassigned.
Gather the plan documents, current service agreements, service and compensation disclosures, recent reports and the actual work requested. The IRS recommends understanding what the service agreement covers, who performs administrative tasks and what information providers and payroll need. Employer responsibility continues after a plan is adopted. [6]
Write down the actual question: which function needs attention, who currently performs it, and what remains uncertain? A new provider is only one possible outcome.
Compare the Strongsville offers accurately
Public descriptions reviewed on October 31, 2026 provide several relevant comparisons:
- Zabarsky & Associates describes itself as a non-selling third-party administrator headquartered in Strongsville. It advertises 401(k) administration and recordkeeping services and says it works with brokers. That description supports a discussion about administration; the TPA label does not settle every function or legal responsibility. [1]
- Smooth 401K advertises investment-discretion fiduciary services, separate administrative fiduciary services, payroll integration and employee education. Its existing-plan review already covers costs, services, technology and engagement. Its disclosures retain final provider selection with the sponsor and give no assurance of ERISA compliance. Smooth Financial and Smooth 401K should not be counted as two independent options from their separate websites. [2][3]
- Ta-Check Financial advertises business retirement-plan and tax services, plan advisory work and participant meetings. Its financial-planning page also describes a complimentary initial strategy session and retirement guide. Its disclosures distinguish tax services from LPL Financial, which does not provide tax advice. Establish which entity and professional would accept the actual assignment. [4][5]
These are advertised offers, not endorsements, verified qualifications, available appointments or FSI relationships. Confirm current scope directly. An introductory meeting does not establish an ongoing appointment, and a service absent from a webpage may still be offered.
Distinguish the capacity in which decisions are made
The IRS describes fiduciary status through the functions performed, including discretion or control, rather than a title. When acting as a plan fiduciary, responsibilities serve participants and beneficiaries, including providing benefits and defraying reasonable plan expenses. That purpose differs from the owner's personal tax objectives. [7]
The Department of Labor explains that accountants, attorneys and actuaries generally are not fiduciaries when acting solely in their professional capacities. Actual discretion or control matters. Employer business choices, such as establishing or amending a plan, differ from implementation, which may involve fiduciary functions. General investment education also differs from specific investment advice; selecting the provider remains a fiduciary action in the guide's context. [8]
Use those distinctions to identify the work being commissioned. A tax engagement, an administrative service and discretionary investment work can involve different functions. Website descriptions and agreement labels alone cannot determine the actual status of each professional.
Compare services and compensation using the same facts
Give candidates the same plan information and required functions. Ask each proposal to identify:
- The entity and professional performing each function.
- The services accepted, exclusions and reports supplied.
- Information and actions still required from the employer.
- Compensation, its sources and the actual payer.
- How changes, questions and ongoing review are handled.
The Labor Department recommends comparing services with total cost, including direct and indirect compensation, and understanding bundled and separately charged services. The plan document should specify how fees are paid. A headline fee therefore cannot settle the comparison, and a company expense should not simply be assumed payable by the plan. [8]
Keep the participant and beneficiary purpose visible when evaluating plan functions and expenses. Ask the qualified reviewer to explain any unclear role, compensation or payer question before relying on the proposal. This page does not determine a permissible fee or who may pay a particular charge.
Keep suitable coverage and resolve a real gap
Return to the owner reviewing the renewal. If the required functions are already appropriately covered, retaining the arrangement may be the right result. If the description is unclear, seek a specific explanation before duplicating services. If an actual required function remains unaccepted, compare a defined appointment for that function.
The useful output identifies covered, uncovered and uncertain work, the supporting agreements and the action needed to resolve each uncertainty. Smooth already advertises substantial review work, and Ta-Check already describes plan advisory services. Ask whether existing work supplies the needed assessment before purchasing another engagement.
The IRS says hiring a provider leaves employer responsibility for selecting and retaining that provider. Document the selection and monitor actual services, reports, fees and participant complaints. Delegating selected functions is not a conclusion that every employer responsibility has ended. [7]
Does hiring a tax firm identify who accepts our plan functions?
Only the actual work and appointment can answer that. Identify the function, responsible entity, professional and accepted scope. Solely professional tax work and discretionary plan functions need separate examination; a shared brand does not resolve them.
Can outsourcing remove every employer responsibility?
Do not assume complete transfer. Selected functions may be delegated, while employer selection and monitoring continue. Have the professional explain the actual arrangement and remaining duties, including matters outside the proposed services. [7]
Should we appoint another provider when something seems missing?
First compare the required work with existing accepted functions. Suitable coverage can remain. Unclear wording may need clarification. A genuine gap can justify comparing a defined appointment, without replacing every existing professional or buying duplicate work.
Is the lowest quoted fee enough to choose?
Compare the same services, all compensation, payer and exclusions. Review what is actually delivered afterward. A smaller headline amount may describe a different assignment, and a larger service menu does not establish that the needed function is included.
Describe the business tax work you need
FSI's owner journey is for business owners with annual personal income before tax of at least $500,000, preferably $1 million or more. Plan assets, payroll and company revenue do not establish eligibility. Summarize the tax work and plan-function coordination you need, without sending participant records. A request does not confirm an available firm, appointment or professional fee.
